Skilling shop fl oor technicians to catalyse energy efficiency in Faridabad cluster
This issue focuses on an innovative strategy to promote energy efficiency sustainably and on a wide scale across industrial clusters, through strengthening the technical capacities of shop floor level personnel in train-the-trainer (TOT) mode. It describes such an initiative implemented by TERI in the Faridabad engineering cluster, with the support of Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation (SSEF) and in close partnership with the local industry association, IamSMEofIndia.
‘Deep dive’ approach for cluster-wide energy efficiency—a case study in Rajkot engineering cluster
This issue focuses on an innovative strategy to promote energy efficient technologies on a large scale, known as ‘saturation’ or ‘deep dive’ approach. It explains the key features of the deep dive approach, contrasting it with the elements that constitute the approach known as research, development, demonstration and dissemination (RDD&D). As example, the article summarizes the deep dive initiative undertaken by the TERI–SDC partnership project in Rajkot foundry cluster during 2015–17.
TERI–SDC Partnership Project: a path-breaking initiative in MSME sector
This issue summarizes the 25-year-long TERI–SDC partnership project in India’s MSME sector, which ended in December 2017. It describes how, through an innovative multi-stakeholder intervention model that has come to be known as Research, Development, Demonstration and Dissemination (RDD&D), the project has successfully introduced clean, energy efficient technological solutions in select energy intensive MSME sub-sectors and clusters, and built local-level capacities to support replications.
Second National Summit on Energy Efficiency in MSMEs
This issue carries a summary of the Second National Summit on Energy Efficiency in MSMEs that was held during 31st October –1st November 2017. The two-day event, organized by BEE and TERI with the support of the Embassy of Switzerland in India, UNIDO and the Ministry of MSME, included participants from MSME clusters across the country, government departments, bilateral and multilateral agencies, academia, banks, consultancies, and R&D establishments.
The theme story of this issue provides an overview of the ceramic and glass industry sub-sectors. Two cluster profiles follow: on the Thangadh ceramic cluster and the Firozabad glass cluster. Also featured is a case study from the Khurja ceramic cluster where an MSME unit has implemented energy conservation measures with technical and capacity building support from UNIDO and BEE.
This issue presents a profile of the Indian forging industry, which forms a vital component in the growth of the Indian automobile industry as well as other industrial sub-sectors such as general engineering, construction equipment, oil, gas, and power. It also carries two cluster profiles: Rajkot forging cluster, studies under the TERI–SDC ‘EESE’ project, and Pune forging cluster, studied under the GEF–World Bank–SIDBI project ‘Financing energy efficiency at MSMEs’.
This issue has, as its theme, the interactive ‘MSME Energy Map of India’ hosted on the SAMEEEKSHA website. The issue also carries the profiles of two rice mill clusters: one in Balasore, Odisha, and the other in Red Hills, Tamil Nadu.
International experience in financing energy efficiency in SME sector: challenges and solutions
This issue focuses on the challenges in financing of energy efficiency in the MSME sector, and solutions to overcome the challenges. It carries interviews with senior officials from Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) and YES Bank, and also summarizes the key schemes and products offered by these two banks for MSME finance.
Initiative—Promoting the Manufacture of Resource Efficient Bricks: GEF–UNDP–MoEFCC Project
This issue focuses on the small-scale brick industry. It presents a profile of the Varanasi brick cluster; an initiative to demonstrate energy efficient kiln firing technology in the Varanasi brick cluster; and an initiative to promote the production and use of clay-fired resource-efficient bricks (REBs) like perforated bricks and hollow blocks.
Cluster News—Skilling foundry workers in Howrah on improved operating practices
This issue focuses on promoting energy efficiency in the Howrah foundry cluster through improved melting technologies like divided blast cupola (DBC) and improving technical skills of plant personnel in best operating practice (BOP). It carries a profile of activities under the TERI-SDC project; a case study on BOP implementation; and the gist of an awareness workshop in Kolkata in June 2016.
This issue focuses on the secondary aluminium industry. It carries a profile of the Pune aluminium castings cluster; a summary of detailed energy audits conducted in the Chennai aluminium casting cluster; and the gist of a consultation meeting held by TERI–SDC with sectorial stakeholders in Chennai.
This issue carries a profile of the foundry industry, with a profile of the Coimbatore foundry cluster and the activities under the TERI–SDC EESE project to promote energy efficiency in the Rajkot foundry cluster. It also presents an overview of the project supported by Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation (SSEF), under which energy studies are being conducted in ten energy intensive MSME clusters in Haryana, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu.
