Uttar Pradesh: Ghazipur brick manufacturing cluster
Introduction
Ghazipur city-the administrative headquarters of Ghazipur district, in the Varanasi division in Uttar Pradesh-is also an important brick manufacturing cluster. There are about 480 brick making units in the cluster, of which about 380 kilns were operated during 2017-18. Almost all the units use fixed chimney Bull’s Trench Kilns (BTKs) for firing of green bricks. A few brick units in the cluster have switched over to zigzag firing process. All the brick kilns are engaged in production of clay fired solid bricks through the conventional handmade process. Thermal energy accounts for almost 100% of energy consumption in brick kilns. Almost the entire energy requirement is met from coal; the annual cluster-level coal consumption is estimated at over 302,000 tonnes. The average production capacity of a typical unit is about 25,000 bricks per day. Brick manufacturing is a seasonal activity, and the units operate for about six months a year (January to June).
