Veraval Seafood Processing Industries (Gujarat)

Introduction

Gujarat contributes about 25% of total marine foods production in India. The coastal industrial town of Veraval, near Somnath, has a cluster of about 60 active seafood processing units, of which 10 units export their products to EU while the remaining 50 units export to South Asian countries and China. All the units produce ready-to-cook (RTC) products. The capacity utilization of these units varies according to fish capture and culture (season and off-season period). January to early April is ‘off-season’ period and is marked by a product ion level as low as 25% of annual average production. May to December is known as ‘season’, with peak season being July to September (about 160% of annual average production). Almost all the units operate only their cold storage plants during off-season, as there are no fresh fish available due to non-fishing activity during the monsoon.
