Bikaner Plaster of Paris industries (Bikaner)

Introduction

Bikaner, one of the desert districts of Rajasthan, has important mineral resources such as china clay, fire clay, gypsum, silica sand and limestone. Gypsum beds up to 30 meters thick and of the best quality are available in Bikaner district. A cluster of around 150 Plaster of Paris (POP) manufacturing units is located in Bikaner, of which around 75 units are in operation. Gypsum is the sole raw material for these POP units. The POP is marketed across India, and about 10–15% is exported, mainly to Nepal. POP is primarily used for the protective and/or decorative coating of walls and ceilings; for moulding and casting decorative elements (in manufacturing industries); and setting broken or fractured bones and surgical instruments (in medical field).
