Indore foundry cluster (Madhya Pradesh)

Introduction

The industrial city of Indore hosts an important foundry cluster. There are about 45 foundry units in the cluster, spread across Indore city and its four industrial areas: Pithampur, Dewas, Ujjain and Sanwar. Initially, the Indore foundry industry came up to cater to the textile machinery manufacturing units that in turn catered to the cotton mills in the area. Subsequently, the foundry units started catering to the demands of the automobile industry (mainly commercial vehicles and construction equipment) which came up in the Pithampur Special Economic Zone (SEZ). The Indore foundry cluster is also famous for the manufacture of ornamental castings, of which a substantial portion is being exported. Most of the small foundry units in Indore, Devas and Ujjain use cupola furnaces, while the larger automotive and steel foundries use induction furnaces.
