Ranchi: Clay Fired Brick Making Cluster

Introduction

Ranchi is the capital of the Jharkhand. Ranchi district is rich in mineral resources such as coal, lime stone, fireclay, china clay, granite, stone and sand. The district hosts a large number of large and small-scale industrial units in diverse sectors. Among them is a cluster of brick kilns around Ranchi city. Almost all the brick kiln units use fixed chimney type Bulls Trench Kilns (BTKs). All the brick kilns are engaged in production of clay fired solid bricks through a manual production process. The average production capacity of a typical BTK in Ranchi cluster is about 15,000 bricks per day. The kilns are engaged in production of bricks for about 7 months in a year-December to June. Cola is the primary fuel used for firing bricks; diesel is used only for providing water for moulding green bricks.
