Coimbatore Bakery Industries (Tamil Nadu)

Introduction

Coimbatore district has a cluster of over 700 bakeries, of which about 370 bakeries are located in the city area and a few units in the industrial area. Micro and small bakeries contribute to about 95% of total number of units in the cluster. The bakery units in Coimbatore cluster are renowned for their quality and variety, and can be categorized into three broad groups based on products: (1) breads and buns, (2) cookies and biscuits and (3) macaroons. Most of the units are retail bakeries that ‘bake in the back and sell in the front’. There are also standalone units which have a single production unit from where the products are distributed to retail shops for sale. The Coimbatore bakery industry provides employment to more than 6000 people directly or indirectly.
