Odisha sponge iron cluster

Introduction

The annual production of iron ore in Odisha is about 46 million tonnes (2004–05 figures). Due to this plentiful and ready availability of resources, around 107 sponge iron manufacturing units, both large and small-scale, are located in Odisha. A majority of these units are located in Sundergarh and Keonjhar districts. The majority of the sponge iron units use horizontal rotary kilns of different capacities ranging from 25 tonnes per day (tpd) to 350 tpd.
