Muzaffarnagar paper cluster (Uttar Pradesh)

Introduction

The industrial town of Muzaffarnagar, in western Uttar Pradesh, hosts an important paper manufacturing cluster. It has 29 small and medium sized paper units that vary in capacity from 1750 tonnes per annum (tpa) to 87,500 tpa. The units use agro residues (like bagasse and wood chips) and recovered paper (waste paper in the form of tightly compressed bales) for paper production. To meet their energy needs, the paper units use electricity as well as coal and biomass (mainly rice husk, pith and bagasse). Most of the units have installed biomass/coal-based cogeneration systems to meet their demands for steam and power simultaneously
