Agra foundry cluster (Uttar Pradesh)

Introduction

The city of Agra, famed for the Taj Mahal and a major tourist destination, also hosts a cluster of small-scale foundries that meet the machinery and spare parts castings requirements of local industries—primarily, manufacturers of diesel generator (DG) sets, automotive components, air compressors, and other engineering sectors. At one time there were over 100 foundry units, of which only about 80 are presently in operation. Of them, about 40 foundries are micro-sized based on annual production capacity (420 tpa); 23 are small (900 tpa); 15 are medium (3000 tpa); and 2 are large (3000 tpa). About 30 foundries use induction melting furnaces and account for 65% of total cluster-level production (0.07 million tpa), while the remaining 50 foundries use natural gas-fired cupola furnaces and account for 35% of total production (0.04 million tpa). The foundries provide direct employment to about 3000 people.
